I care give for my mom, 90 years old. Moderate late stage Alzheimer’s. I just realized that even with this terrible disease I have to realize I still have things to be grateful for.
There are a lot of stories about people being combative when it comes time to bathe. As an example, my sister has a friend whose husband just passed from Alzheimer’s and he punched her in the face when she suggested it was time to shower. My mom does not realize when she needs bathing. I put fresh clothing out for her, have her towels ready and ask her to remove her clothes and all she has to do is get in the shower. Every single time, she complys without complaint.
Does anyone have something they are grateful for even in a challenging situation such as being a caregiver?
Be thankful for little things because they are most important:
You have roof over your head.
You ate today
You have good heart
You wish good for others
You have clean water
Someone cares about you
You strive to be better
You have clean clothes
You have a dream
You are breathing.
And I am grateful as well to be part this forum.
Grateful to be part of this Aging Care.
I am healthy, I live comfortably and am finally learning who I am. (as opposed to who I was expected to be) Believe me, I am grateful every single day!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you on the USA side of our border.
Her husband and Dad died, last November. She of course had a horrible year. The worst part was because she was so vonerable, and lonely, creepy men surrounded her.
She finally found the perfect man for right now, anyways. He is really good to her and actually not physically capable of being creepy. They have developed the perfect companionship. He is lonely, she is lonely, and neither one want anything else.
I am not now a caregiver. I mean, N. and I, as partners, are always propping one another up over SOMETHING, but I am no longer a caregiver.
I am, however, inCREDIBLY grateful, and for more things than I can even begin to mention. At 82, and while I went through the usual lost relationships, and lost loved ones, and an illness of two for myself or those I loved did so, I have done it with incredible support and good luck. I spend my life now really in gratefulness for another good day. And it takes very little to light a day for me. A good book, a sweet foster dog, a more manageable garden, sweet and kind people around me--GOOD PEOPLE.
Speaking of which, I am very grateful for this Forum, which daily gives me hope in us humans (something I don't always have in abundance). I have met here some of the smartest, kindest, most giving, most courageous and enduring folks ever. Getting up every a.m. at 6 a.m or so, my laptop comes open, propped on its own special pillow, the coffee with cream rests on the windowsill by my bed, the Foster does her morning ablutions and joins me covered in her snug blankie, and I pound away on the keyboard. For me, somewhat a recluse, it is social connection. As an old nurse it lets me pretend I can still help someone and am not ONLY a drag and a "taker" on my society--on the community.
So I am very grateful. For health and family and friends and animals and gardens and a dog on my bed, the cream in my coffee. And for YOU, too.
Thanks for asking.
I want to wish everyone a good holiday.
I'm also grateful that I am not hosting tomorrow.
I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.
sadin - that trust from your mom is wonderful.
fawnby - stay safe!!!
Spoke with stubborn MIL on the phone , she has decided she ISN’T going to fly to Florida with a blood clot in her leg . 🙏🏻🙏🏻
For now anyway . 😬🙄
I think telling her multiple times over the last few weeks that we are NOT flying down there to rescue her if something happens may have worked !!! Either that or the fact that I actually got on the phone the last two calls .( rare on my part ).
Golden, I'm so glad you are getting sometime to just do you! 🙂
I am very grateful today for some respite for a couple of weeks. R has gone for on a trip with one of his dds and 2 grandsons (planned before the accident). The boys are into ball games so it will be centered in that. He still tires easily so hopefully will get the rest he needs. I certainly will and am thankful for this time off. It's not been that bad but he needs more help than before so I have been "on duty" more. He is driving now and thankfully stops and rests when he needs to. He will have appointments when he comes back and I will go with him to those.
I am grateful for your story today, wheat
