My loved one rises about 7 AM and is tired by 10AM and takes another hour nap. About 2 PM he takes another nap and by 9 PM is in bed. Sometimes he naps 3 times a day. He has been diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s and is functioning pretty well- very forgetful but he can go to stores, drive, and has all his ADL skills. I wanted to know if I should discourage all the napping to keep him alert or if this is just a sign of progressing and I should just accept it.
But since you're asking about the sleeping, did it come on quickly or gradually? Is he on any meds that could cause him to be tired like this? Maybe it could be depression, as said by others.
Maybe his AZ is progressing a bit?
Good luck.
Just another observation about his driving... have you gone out with him as a passenger lately to see first hand what his abilities currently are? Most likely he won't report any worrisome incidents to you. There may not ever be any clear signs that he should stop, except to know that day is coming sooner than later for him, for everyone's safety.
My uncle went through a red light and was t-boned, which killed his wife and dog and fortunately spared the people in the other car. My MIL was having short-term memory issues and accidentally hit the gas instead of brake, making her crash into a stop sign very near where school kids were standing and waiting for the bus. She didn't know how or why it happened. Her van looked like it had been in a pinball machine and we realized she was having more incidents than we realized.
