I live in SW New Jersey. I would not contact a Hospital Social Worker.

I would start with Social Services in your county. (Where I live its all done by phone) Ask about Medicaid care in the home. There is a criteria that needs to be met. Medicaid does not take your house. Its considered an exempt asset. This is a question, though, you need to run by the Medicaid caseworker.

Call your County Office of Aging. Ask what resources they can provide. If there is a problem with the cost of her meds, call her doctor, there maybe help.

Since you are on SSI you have Medicaid too? Here is my little town, produce is being given away free to those who get assistance. There is a monthly government program. Call your local United Way. There are probably Churches that have food closets. Food Stamps. There are resources out there, u just have to find them.

I'd have thought your best bet is to ask Medicaid. This page -

https://www.state.nj.us/humanservices/dmahs/clients/medicaid/

- has the right links and phone numbers on it, including a link where you can find details for your county.

The rest of the same human services website might also be helpful in finding support and services for family caregivers.

Your profile states that your brother lives with your mother in your mother's home as her primary caregiver; and the family is concerned that Medicaid would claim your mother's house. All I really know about this subject is that it's very complicated! - but I think it's fair to say that it isn't necessarily true that your brother would lose his home, if that's the main worry? It would depend on all sorts of things, such as his own age and health, and how long he has been your mother's caregiver.

But even if eventually Medicaid did claim back your mother's funding after she passes, your brother would have time to make plans. They don't turf dedicated caregivers out on the street at a moment's notice and take everything your mother ever possessed.
