I’m at a loss here about how to handle a situation. Over the last two weeks, my father has exhibited sexually inappropriate behavior at his memory care facility (directed at staff). He has suspected FTD/Alz mix.
His dr has upped his Seroquel dose hoping that helps, but so far the behaviors have just escalated. The memory care facility seems to be nearing the end of their rope, and just not something they want to deal with. They say he does not remember that they told him he can’t do these things….well, obviously he doesn’t remember…he has dementia! They want me to come in and give my father a “talking-to” about these behaviors…but he won’t even remember that I was there or what I said.
Has anyone had a family member display these behaviors? Did anything help? If they got kicked out of a facility, did another facility take them? Any advice welcome, I’m an only child and do not have anyone to go to for advice/help. Thank you.

I’m wondering if you could give a bit more detail about the ‘behaviors’, as they can cover anything from display, to grabbing, to just verbal, to assault and attempted rape. Staff at a MC should be able to deal with the less extreme examples, so it might help to know what’s actually going on. You say that his doctor has “upped his Seroquel dose hoping that helps, but so far the behaviors have just escalated”. Perhaps get back to the doctor to increase the dose – it probably won’t continue to increase the problem if it gets high enough.

This may not be ideal, but to use an old expression 'needs must when the devil drives'. He must have a place that will take him. This stage may not last forever, or even all that long.

Exactly, he'll probably decline into a catatonic like state.

Dad needs a new doctor or geriatric psychiatrist who understands how to medicate Inappropriate Sexual Behavior or ISB in dementia patients! And the staff is asking you to tell dad something he won't remember and cannot comprehend, for petesake. Ridiculous. Get them to refer you to a geriatric psychiatrist stat who is better equipped to handle this. Another memory care won't take him with ISB issues either, and this current MC can ask him to leave. All the Residents and staff have to feel safe there and not be harassed or sexually bothered by another resident.

Wishing you the best of luck with a difficult situation.

Even if his testicles are removed, the urge to climax or get some pleasurable feeling remains, so he will keep masturbating.

The solution is to leave him in his room where he can do that all day unless staff is tending him. At which point they should restrain him if he starts playing with himself, then get out to allow him to do that all day.

It is illegal for a facility to restrain their residents in any way. It's even illegal to restrain someone in a private home.

I agree that he needs a different doctor.

Also, the staff sound like they are clueless about dementia and memory loss.

He'll probably head to the stage where he'll sit in front of the tv all day, only leaving for meals.

To make you feel less alone this is frequently reported and if you go up to the AgingCare timeline top of the page, to the search bar, and type in inappropriate sexual behavior you will see many other letters.

The appropriate manner is already being addressed by you; this may be able to be handled with medications. Stay in close touch with the doctors. The facility should not be unused to managing this (hopefully) as it is a manifestation we certainly see often on the forum.

I am so sorry and am wishing you the very best of luck.
