Mike upchucked a blood clot that was the size of a golf ball. He is too confused to tell me what happened and the nurses put it down to a bloody nose! I was not there for this event so I don't know what to say about the whole thing. He has COPD so I am thinking the lung but I can't know for sure. I asked him if he wanted to go to the hospital but he gave me an adamant NO! I don't know what do do.

For what it's worth, my late mother would have horrible nosebleeds and cough up GIGANTIC blood clots the size of a plum, honest to God. I'd get her sent to the ER by ambulance every time, due to the amount of blood loss she'd experience, and that the ALF could not get the nosebleed to stop. When I got there one time, the doctor was photographing the clot! He was going to pin it to the board in the break room to show the rest of the team what the largest blood clot he'd ever seen looked like!

I should also mention that mom was on blood thinners when she'd have these terrible nosebleeds.........and she had to discontinue them as a result. Is Mike on blood thinners, by chance? They do tend to cause issues such as this sometimes. But blood clots can be serious, as you know.

You may want to get him to the ER for a check, to be on the safe side, esp with COPD at play, I don't know. But like I said, mom went every single time she had the nosebleed issue.

Good luck!

Coughing out blood is called hemoptysis. It s the result of a rupture of tinny blood vessels inside the bronchi. The most common cause is LUNG CANCER. Your husband has COPD and cancer occurs frequently in persons with COPD. Have him checked by a pulmonologist as soon as possible. Even if he doesn't have cancer, a serious life-threatening hemorrhage (hemoptysis) may happen anytime.

It certainly CAN be from a bloody nose. Question here is did he HAVE a bloody nose. I have seen this as a nurse, but I have also seen clots from the lung coughed up for any reason.
If Mike is competent to make his decisions then it sounds like he just made it, and is willing to live or to die by it. If however Mike has an deficits mentally then this POA should consider transporting to ER for chest xray. Especially worrisome would be any increase in his normal O2 saturation levels. Any chest pain means immediate 911 call if Mike is not a DNR on hospice.
This is a medical question and I suggest that Mike's Doctor be contacted today by Mike or his POA.

I went to the ER one time to get a shot because I got stung by a wasp. Since I was "low risk" other than me going into Anaphylactic shock I sat and waited. While sitting there an elderly woman came in with her daughter. The elderly woman had a horrible nose bled and was coughing up blood clots like you describe. She was carrying a clear plastic container full of them so the doctor could see. She had blood from under her nose to waist. Both women were in full panic mode and the elder woman was as white as a sheet. They got in first.
