I feel as though I live in a very condensed time span compared to other people. It makes it hard to remember who I am close to. Someone I have been hanging out with for 2 weeks could easily feel the same as someone I've hung out with for years. My interests jump around so much because I can't remember why I was originally interested in it. I can watch old videos of my self. I see that it's me, but can not pull the memory of that instance out for the life of me. I have been able to live with it for while now convincing myself it's fine, it's whatever. Although, I think the time span I am living in is getting shorter and I'm not sure if this is a real problem or me just psyching myself out.

Hi, Speedylegs. I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing a memory issue.

So it's just long-term memory that seems to be affected? How old are you and do you have any sense of how long this has been happening? I'm wondering if asking a trusted friend or family member their impressions might be helpful. Or could you reach out to a doctor? It seems like a good idea to me to check this out.

I hope others have some thoughts for you.

Im 23 years old. Yes just long-term, my short term is completely unaffected as far as i can tell. My earliest sense of being aware of this was senior year highschool so 18 years old. I remember kind of joking with my friends saying how they better keep in touch or ill forget them. I believe it was at this point i knew something might be wrong, but if i knew about it then it was probably happening even earlier. I think at that point I made a conclusion that my memory could span 5 years before i completely forgot something. Now it seems that time span i live in as i call it is only 2 years maybe less. Id have to sit down and really try and remember something that happend a year ago. Even now trying to remember my 22nd birthday escapes me. Might take me 10 minutes to remember it if i do manage to. Friends tell me stories from college and i just kind of have to nod in agreement pretending i remember. I can remember old stories that i tell people alot because of repetition, but even those are beginning to feel like just an image in my head. Like picturing that you went skydiving but you actually never did.

Also, I have read about a condition called depersonalization disorder that can cause bouts of amnesia or other difficulties with memory, apparently. There is a feeling the person has of not feeling "real", feeling detached from themselves. It's a very rare condition but I thought I'd mention it in case it is helpful in clarifying what's going on.

I would think a doctor could help point you to a specialist to begin sorting this out.

This sounds like a difficult thing to live with, and I am not sure that this is a good site to find information from. The people who use this site are carers, almost always for elderly people. Many of the people they care for have dementia, but your symptoms don't sound at all like dementia and you are only 23. It might be best if you look for another site that may have more relevant information. Best of luck!

You might want to begin with a site like this:

https://www.healthline.com/health/long-term-memory-loss

But, after you do a little research, I would definitely consult a medical professional. You deserve your memories!

It's very interesting. I would seek an explanation from medical professionals. If possible, I'd try experts, probably neurology at a large teaching hospital.
