I lived with her for 4 years and was on the lease with the apartment. So my mother passed away here very recently and now the landlord says I have one week to move out but I spoke with housing authority they said I could stay until 1st of October or if a single bedroom came up in my area. Can a landlord do that even though I was on the lease? They said since I was on the lease I was a caregiver so they don't have to give me notice. I never received a letter stating I had 30 days or anything. I don't know what to do. I had to quit my job to take care of my mother until she died. I did get a job just now and trying to save so I can get my own place again.
I would talk to Housing Authority again and get the extension in writing. You have a little time until Oct 1, maybe a single bedroom will become vacant. Meanwhile do you have any family or a friend you can stay with? You have enough going on after losing your mother and now you need to deal with all this. Another option would be to rent a motel room for the month. My brother did that when he had to move because of his dog. He rented an efficiency for a few months and it was cheaper by the month and less expensive than renting apartment. I hope everything works out for you and you get a place soon. you should consider contacting the housing authority to get a new solo lease IF you are eligible to stay there—assuming this wasn’t senior housing that you aren’t eligible to live in by yourself.
It sounds as though you have sorted out the housing situation, is that correct?
The landlord may say anything he wants but he needs to go thru the eviction process I would think. He doesn't want to because it cost him money. You need to call Housing Authority again, like said, and have them put what they say in writing and maybe call the landlord and tell him you r within your rights. I would think to get the police involved, the landlord will need to show them an eviction notice of some kind. There are tenant rights and sometimes they are not in the landlords favor. Even with a 30 day notice, I think, if the tenant does not leave the landlord then has to evict.
