She has always had issues with being incontinent with her urine, but now for the past two weeks has started loosing control of her bowels during the night and sometimes during the day (mostly at night).

I just don't know if this is another stage of the disease or something else that we need to be concerned with.

My father is 86 and has dementia, living in assisted living.. He too lately has no control over his bowels.... I don't know if this is just another part of the disease either.... It's hard on all of us because when we want to take him out of the assisted living for the day or just a few hours, he will have "an accident". He has a hard time cleaning himself up.. He is wearing depends now for the last 6 months.... His doctor doesn't seem to be concerned about this...

My mom has this too. Her doctor connected us to home health care which was upgraded to hospice care. The company that provides this care for my mom is called Amedisys. There are other companies that do this. Medicare pays them. They provide incontinence supplies. This forum has been extremely helpful to me. Please continue to read other posts and ask more questions. UTI's are extremely hard on elders and those with dementia. Keeping the vagina clean, especially after BM incontinence is critical. Our hospice provider gives us special cleansers that make it easier. They also send a CNA to my mom's home 3 times a week to help bathe her. My mom was hospitalized for a week over an infection. She also has had two UTI's after that which didn't require hospitalization. The hospice service provided antibiotics to treat those. A nurse comes to the home 3 times a week and reports to my mom's physician. I would recommend you talk to your mom's doctor and ask for help from a home health or hospice company. The Alzheimer's association can give you information. Again, asking specific questions on this site and reading old posts has been extremely helpful to me. Thank-you for all you are doing to care for your mother. She may not be able to say it anymore but I know she appreciates you too! :)

Hi there,
My Mom does not have dementia but she has been dealing with UTIs for years due to cystocele and rectocele so she has urinary retention. For many years I would have her void in a brief so she wouldn't hold it and hopefully empty her bladder, but this year has been especially difficult. She developed sepsis and was in the hospital for a week. Every time she finished her antibiotics in 2 days another UTI! After visiting with 3 different urologists I found a winner. Mom has had a foley in for about 3 months now and I know this is controversial because of UTIs! I keep her as clean as I possibly can and use a product called Sensi Care it is suppose to help kill ecoli. I also give her a drink by the company "NOW" it is Cranberry Mannose + Probiotics, she drinks this as many as 3 times a day. I also give her Primadolphilus Optima Womens probiotics,it is refrigerated. She also has a difficult time with her bowells and I wish I could help more with that but I give her Metamucil because it is natural and also helps with cholesterol.
I hope this might help as I deal with this everyday and it is so difficult! Antibiotics can cause C diff and that can be another disaster. So far an entire month has gone by and no UTI. It's a tough road and I am so thankful for this site to learn and share. Oh one last note Mom is diabetic and takes Warfarin and the drink is OK for these patients.

My mother has had UTI's over and over and has been incontinent with her bowels and diarrhea for many months. She complained of pain in her stomach but doctor never seemed concerned. When she was admitted to hospital for dehydration and high blood pressure, then sent to rehab/nursing home, she was finally diagnosed with c diff. There was justification for pain in stomach and I'm sorry I didn't demand more attention from doctor. C diff is very difficult to get rid of and can take several treatments with antibiotics or even IV. It also requires probiotics be taken. I am so thankful for this site and those who take the time to share.

Thank you all for sharing with us. I was giving my mom probiotics and cranberry tablets and the last time I mentioned to her doctor about the bowel issue, he told me to stop those supplements. I did with hesitation and a week later she is still doing this, so I am putting her back on those today. I am just thinking that this is the next stage in this ugly, ugly disease.
She was on Hospice a year ago, but they really and truly almost let her die. I kept telling them that she had a UTI and they would not test her, I had to really show myself and they did. By that time she was septic and could not walk, sit, or stand. By the grace of God we got through that and she is still with us today. Needless to say, it wasn't her time for Hospice. They were the nicest people, but they are really only there to make someone comfortable and my mother needed medical attention to treat and prevent future UTI's, which they were not doing. God bless you all for the responses to my questions, this forum is wonderful and is such a blessing to us.
