LO needs to have water in large 12 oz cup w/ lid. She’s been dehydrated to the point of delirium more than once so I do everything to get her to drink. How is a 6 ounce juice glass with no lid going to accomplish this goal and she needs to use a straw too. I’ll bring in a to-go cup but how stupid is this move? They Also threw out all insulated plastic soup bowls with weighted bottoms. Glass and ceramic bowls will be hot. I need to vent about these senseless decisions. Dietary staff told me it was for aesthetics. It can’t be about the green agenda to save the planet because all the plastic used to wrap sterile medical supplies negates any reason to eliminate other plastic items. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
You know, states like California are banning plastic. We’ve banned plastic shopping bags, straws (apparently if we ask a restaurant for a plastic straw, they can give us one). Hotels can’t use plastic toiletry bottles anymore.
Cuz, paper straws suck! No pun intended. You can taste the paper and it starts to deteriorate in a matter of a few minutes.
We use stainless steel and they get to cold.
There is a reason straws are plastic.
Having dehydrated/sick patients is better for aesthetics? Well, gosh, I know when I visit my friend in her NH I really look for aesthetics in their choice of DISHWARE.
First and foremost comes in meeting the NEEDS of the patient.
Those plastic mugs with straws may not look lovely, but they are not going break if dropped, they have large easy to drip handles and also a 'measurement' on the side so you can quickly see how much fluid you LO is taking in.
I have a cute little squatty one that kept after a back surgery. I use it from time to time as try to remind myself to drink more water. I didn't KNOW I was ruining the aesthetics of my home by having this in plain view!
Time for a face to face with the DON or supervisor--sometimes someone gets a wild hair of an idea and it isn't necessarily "better" by any means.
