I am becoming the conservator for a family member who receives Social Security and a monthly pension payment. I have not yet received my papers or set up a conservatorship account.

I will set up a SSA Rep Payee account to begin receiving the SSA payment. Has anyone had success redirecting the pension direct deposit?

Also, am I required to close her old account after I set up the conservatorship account? I could just keep it open, and make periodic transfers if the bank allows.

She will be qualifying for state aid in a few months after her money is spent down and I want to be sure I get this right so that she is not disqualified.

I am wondering why you can't use the existing account. Maybe because you aren't on it and she is incapacitated? The bank will not allow you to conduct her business through her account?

Have you talked to the bank? Will they allow you to use her current account once they have an original set of the court conservator papers?
