I just got my step-dads DD214 papers I requested so if and when my mother has to go into an assisted living home, she could get VA benefits, Well to my surprise he has OTH discharge! The form doesent say his conduct and there are a lot of other numbers and letters on the form I dont understand. He got a national defense medal and it doesent say it was taken back, Im just really confused! This was my last hope of financial help. Sometimes you find things out about your loved ones after they are gone that is disappointing, thats why now I try to tell my grown children almost all things about me, the old saying , " whats done in the dark will come out in the light"

Please be sure to check with the VA directly, to make sure there wasn't a mixup in the records! If you get the same answer, call again another time to be triple sure!

Medicaid is another possibility. Does she have Medicare?

yes she has medicare, and here in Md she does not qualify for medicaid. Her income she does not qualify for any state funding which what she may be abele to get there is a freeze on funds, or a 2 year and up waiting list, or try this agency and that agency does not know what ou talking about. Its a never ending battle. But I am going to try VA directly.

OTH is fine for the benefit, anything other than dishonorable or Bad Conduct should work

OTH should be ok. It would be my suggestion to find a VA specialist in your area that can help you with the paperwork for application. Going directly to the VA is a nightmare. Take a look in the phonebook or internet for VA Assistance Services. Most of these are free of charge. (Dont deal with the ones that charge) If you need a number of someone send me an email. They are here in Knoxville, but they may know someone in your area.

Lots of time you get what you pay for - make sure you don't fall prey to the "free" services that are a front ot get you to lock your parent's money up in an annuity. Good Luck!
